Shilshole Bay Marina

Seattle, Washington 2007

This interactive water feature is located in the main plaza at Shilshole Bay Marina, Seattle’s largest marina.

The fountain expresses cultural and natural aspects of its setting. It includes a set of sculptural stainless steel ribs that evoke both a boat hull and whale skeleton, and pick up on the masts of boats in the marina.  Water running down the ribs makes the fountain a kinetic visual and sonic experience, as well as a fun place for children to play on warm summer days.

Carved basalt columns set in a pool of water conjure waves.  The basalt forms create places to sit, lie down, and interact with the water.

Haddad|Drugan also collaborated with Mithun Architects on the plaza design, which includes several hull-shaped planting areas that reference the forms of the fountain.
