Lineage San Jose, CA 2007 |
|
Lineage is composed of three sculptural elements creating a connective line that joins Fire Station 35 with the Southside Community Center. Water and light activate the Strata Wall, Tule Reed Drain, and Community Beacons. Artifacts depicting the area’s natural and cultural history are layered into the Strata Wall. As if excavated, the layers evoke the area’s past, present and future in a vertical timeline with one side about the community, and the other focusing on fire fighting. The mass of the Strata Wall is counter-balanced with an open grove of mirrored tule reeds recalling the tall marsh plant once throughout the area. Suspended near the top of the rods, a luminescent anodized gold pipe channels irrigation water to the runnel in the top of the Strata Wall, from which it cascades onto a splash stone and into the landscape. Three sculptural beacons extend from the Tule Reed Drain to the Southside Community Center. Drawing from the community’s cultural history, their form is in part inspired from the area’s early carved log ladder forms called ‘escaleras’, and each has a different back lit historic Edenvale image. A faceted face of mirrored stainless steel reflects the historic photo, the surrounding, and the viewer literally uniting the past and present and connecting the viewer to the lineage of the Edenvale Community.
