Oxbow Park

Seattle, Washington 2004

Oxbow Park is the result of a grassroots effort by Seattle’s Georgetown community to turn a vacant one-acre lot into a park, and save the landmark historical "Hat ‘n’ Boots" structures in the process.

Laura Haddad provided design services to the project from its conception, leading community workshops and conducting surveys to identify program elements and design ideas. Through this process she established a conceptual design with an "industrial-artistic-cowboy" theme based on the character of the neighborhood.

Following this phase Laura assisted Jones & Jones Architects and Landscape Architects on developing the concept. In addition to the relocated Hat ‘n’ Boots, the park includes community gardens, an entry plaza, landforms, a play area, native plants, open space, a rain garden, and concrete walls with embedded metal artifacts.

In 2003 Jones & Jones won a WASLA Honor Award for the design of Oxbow Park. The jury commented on the "defiant civic space" and "strong concept."

Park construction is near completion and Hat 'n' Boots restoration will begin soon.
