Theatrum Mundi

Seattle, Washington 2007

Greenbridge is a 569 unit mixed-income Hope VI housing development that also includes parks, retail, a community center, and a school. Laura Haddad designed a signature artwork for Greenbridge's central plaza, adjacent to the John Wiley Community Center.

Theatrum Mundi, a monumental art screen, is an abstracted map of the Greenbridge development.  The piece is made from overlapping panels of anodized aluminum and painted steel.  Rectangular perforations and protrusions represent buildings.  The sweeping horizontal bands pick up on the plaza design, referencing latitude lines of global maps.  The art is interactive, inviting residents to peer through the holes, and locate their homes. The art also serves as a backdrop for the theater of everyday life that will occur in the plaza, the heart of Greenbridge.
